2020 is the first year that the Hanover, Bentinck and Brant Agricultural Society has the pleasure of offering the Charlie & Mildred Martin Scholarship. This annual award of $1500 is awarded to two Hanover, Bentinck or Brocton students who are entering or currently enrolled in a post-secondary agricultural, agri-business, or environmental program and who have a proven record of involvement in the community showing interest in the field of agriculture or the environment.
We are pleased to announce that this year’s winners of the scholarship are Taylor Draper and Tobias Aeberhard. For decades, Charlie and Mildred Martin were pillars of the Hanover Fair and like the Martins, both Taylor and Tobias have proven that they also possess great community spirit, a strong work ethic and genuine interest in the field of agriculture.
Taylor is the daughter of Cheryll and Derek Draper from Durham. Taylor showed her first calf at the Hanover Fair when she was three years old and she hasn’t stopped since. She is now a youth leader and greatly enjoys teaching the younger kids about agriculture. She will be entering Ridgetown College of Agriculture this fall in the associate diploma program. Taylor has started her apprenticeship as a dairy herdsperson and is receiving her on-farm training at Blanhaven Farms. She aspires to be employed at a show barn and to travel across Canada showing stock and learning about agriculture in other areas.
Tobias is the son of Andreas and Petra Aeberhard who operate a farm near Neustadt. Tobias is very familiar with the farm way of life and has worked along with his family with the beef cattle and sheep that they raise on their farm. He also has years of experience with the 4-H sheep and ploughing clubs. Tobias has been accepted into a Farm Equipment Technician apprenticeship with Roberts Farm Equipment. He has always loved to fix things, especially around the farm, and after doing a co-op placement at the dealership, he was hooked! He realizes how important it is to farmers to have someone they can count on to get their machinery up and running as quickly as possible. Tobias hopes to someday run his own farm equipment repair shop
The awards will be presented as part of our virtual Hanover Fair which takes place from August 7 to 9th.
